Excuses

Nancy Pelosi wanted so bad to say something about the torture she was briefed about, but she couldn’t because it was a secret. Folks, the ability of the state to keep secrets from the public is more important than a couple terrorist suspects getting waterboarded. Responsible Democrats understand that.
Jane Harman wrote a letter, though, which I guess got classified? She wrote a letter to the CIA asking them to declassify her own letter, but they wouldn’t. That wasn’t nice of them, was it?
OK, it’s like this. The House Intelligence Committee apparently has to swear an oath of secrecy not to reveal any classified information. So the CIA is like, Hey guys, we’re gonna waterboard some fucking terrorists, OK? Then all the bleeding-heart Democrats get sad because they value human life. They want to complain about it, but oops —- the fact that the CIA is waterboarding people is classified. And they couldn’t do anything about it anyway, because first the Republicans were in power and now even though the balance of power has shifted in favor of the Democrats, they still can’t get anything done because they don’t have enough power. Therefore, people who are mean to Nancy Pelosi are mean, and you should vote for more and better Clintons in 2008.
Who knows what Pelosi was told? Maybe nobody uttered the words torture and waterboarding. Maybe the proposed interrogation techniques were not described in detail. Maybe —- something. Who knows? Not most of us. Most of us never will know, because the state keeps these secrets from us.
